Can you help me grow something under my evergreen trees?

Evergreen Candle

What can I plant there?

Growing anything under Evergreen trees is quite challenging.

There are very few plants that will grow at our altitude in the shade and acidity of evergreen trees. I have, on occasion and under specific circumstances gotten some plants to grow there, however, on a whole, in our area, this situation is best solved with other means.

It is best to decide situation, by situation how to handle these spaces. Some spaces will be tolerated by specific plants, other spaces are best handled with mulch, flagstone, pea gravel or other non-living solution.

Never the less, here are some of the plants I have used, or heard about for our area:

(Several of these are hardy, aggressive or non-native plants that could pose an invasive problem to the areas surrounding your garden, and therefore would only be considered in very restricted situations.)

  • Achillea miliefolium
  • Lamium (Creeping Phlox)
  • Creeping Wintergreen
  • Ajuga reptans
  • Bishops Weed
